Madame Walker chilling with friends in her car
She was born Sarah Breedlove, on December 23rd 1867. She had five siblings, one sister and four brothers. By the age of seven both her parents were dead.
At the age of 14, she married Moses McWilliams . Three years later her daughter, Lelia McWilliams, was born. When Sarah was 20, and Lelia was just 2 years old, Sarah's husband died.
Sarah experienced severe dandruff and other scalp ailments. She developed baldness due to these skin disorders and the application of harsh products like lye that were included in soaps used to cleanse the hair. Because most Americans lacked indoor plumbing, central heating and electricity, they bathed and washed their hair infrequently. Initially she learned about hair care from her brothers, who owned a barber shop in St. Louis.

This led her to become a commission agent selling products for Annie Turnbo Malone, an African American hair care entrepreneur. While working with Annie Malone, she adapted her knowledge of hair and hair products. She moved to Denver to work on her hair care products, and married Charles Joseph Walker, a newspaper advertising salesman. She emerged with the name Madam C. J. Walker, an independent hairdresser and retailer of cosmetic creams. After their marriage Charles Walker provided advice on advertising and promotion, while Madam C. J. Walker trained women to become "beauty culturists" and to learn the art of selling.

She began to teach and train other black women in women's independence, budgeting, and grooming in order to help them build their own businesses. She also gave lectures on political, economic and social issues at conventions sponsored by powerful black institutions(someone who was practically semi-literate herself).
At her death ( May 25, 1919) she was considered to be the wealthiest African American woman in America.

How to Bounce Back After Adversity
If you are not experiencing adversity right now, you most probably will, so this is going to be helpful to you. If you are experiencing adversity, then you get to apply these steps right away!
- Go to God. This is #1 for a reason. The first and best thing we can do when either overwhelmed or suffering is to run to God. Look to him for refuge and wisdom. Let your adversity drive you toward The Lord. Schedule a time to get alone with him.
- Decide to remain faithful. Make up your mind right away that you will not be a statistic, that you will endure and you will rebuild. Decide that now before God and remind yourself of that commitment throughout the time of trouble.
- Take care of your health. You need your best self to handle this so don’t let yourself go. Your physical well-being will affect your emotional and spiritual states. So make sure you get your sleep, eat healthy, work out, and keep as consistent a schedule as possible.
- Let go of some responsibilities. Most are too busy anyway. But now…when your emotions are overwhelmed, it’s important to see which responsibilities are draining and unnecessary, and which are necessary and good for refueling. Without “dumping” on others, let go of whatever you can, at least temporarily.
- Maintain the others. Try not to let this affliction become an excuse for poor performance in other areas. Don’t compound your trouble by neglecting necessary responsibilities (housekeeping, family relationships, job, etc.). Doing well in other areas of life will help build valuable strength.
- Make time for your spirit. If you have not been maintaining a daily quiet time for Bible reading, prayer, and other devotional reflection, now is the time to start. This is huge! Over-comers are those who learn to prioritize in times of adversity. Your relationship with God needs to be that first priority!
- Pursue Godly counsel. Solomon said, “In the multitude of counselors there is safety.” God has put wise and spiritually minded people in your life for your benefit (we have lots of them here at The Bridge). Make use of them. Get their feedback. Their perspective might be initially painful, but it will ultimately be refreshing.
- Go with God. This may look similar to point #1, but it’s different. Your way out of the wilderness is probably not the way your natural inclinations will take you. Let God lead you through this and accept what he has in it. Apply Biblical principles, listen to Godly counsel, pay attention to the Lord’s prompting, and let him bring you through whatever this is without you forcing something that you’ll regret later.
It may seem like the end of the world when you are in the middle of adversity, but it probably is not. If you stick with the above eight steps, you can get through this and find valuable lessons and outcomes because of it. So don’t let this ruin you. Go to God and let him take you through it.

Bouncing Back From Adversity
The following is a system for you to bounce back from any form of adversity...For example...
Steve Jobs. He got fired from his own company, only to return and make it the single most valuable company in the world.
Or Andre Agassi. He went from being the number one tennis player in the world, to losing all passion for the game, dropping to rank number 141, and then bouncing back to number one again - in just one year.
So... how did they do it? How did they overcome such huge defeats to become incredibly successful?
Well the Hint is below, and these do not have a thing to do with religion or plain psychology.
1) Reprogram you conscious mind so you can immediately shift current reality and feel more "present."
2) Reprogram your subconscious mind so you can shed your negative beliefs and manifest what you truly desire.
3) Raise your vibration(e.g. your Joyful and Happy thoughts) to the highest level you can manage so you can connect to your higher self/inner man and enjoy deep inner peace and tranquility, regardless of what life throws at you.

The Path to Success is Coming to you
A single talent is not a ticket to success in life. It must be nurtured on a daily basis.
Give yourself a moment to appreciate what you’ve achieved, but no more. When the time comes to move forward, success is but a single point on a much longer journey - it is not the end of that journey.
Imagine a company like Apple stopping after the iPod or Henry Ford deciding the Model T was good enough. Where would we be today without people constantly striving to improve upon what they’ve already achieved?
2 - Learn from Failure and Find Things to Improve
If success is a marker on your journey, failure is the map.

Revel in failure and learn from it at every step. The most successful entrepreneurs in history are remembered for their triumphs but will tell you only of their failures and how they learned from them.
Recognize the potential in those moments and use them to propel yourself forward.
3 - Visualize the Positive You’ll Discover in the Next Step
When the next step is unsure, imagine what it COULD be.
Imagine the successes you can have and how you will use those to get closer to your goal. Imagine the knowledge you will gain, even if you fail to achieve the results you are striving for.
Whatever you do, visualize yourself doing something. It might feel like you’re looking out over a cliff, unsure of what’s beyond the clouds but know that whatever you find beyond those clouds is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
The Path to Success
Every path is different and those who enjoy and learn from the steps in their personal path to success will thrive.
Be the one who finds joy in even the hardest moments and you will never dread what comes next on the arduous journey you’ve set yourself on.

The Simple Philosophy of M.K.O Abiola
I don't know how authentic this story is but I like it all the same. Hope you will too.
24 hours before his death, Chief MKO Abiola wrote;
" There are two reasons behind what people called
my generosity. Firstly, I am a Muslim and
generosity is enjoined on all Muslims by Islam.
Secondly, I am also a realist. I happen to know
that hoarding earthly wealth is meaningless, in so
far as a millionaire, will not, when he dies, be
buried with his millions. I prefer to share the little I have with those who have none at all, in the belief
that God, whose command I obey, will reward me
in the next world. "
" I can't even hoard things for my children as
many people do. For one thing, how do I know
that my children, when I die, will not spend all the
wealth I have, thus amassed through tight -
fistedness within 24 hours! Such a thing has
happened to many so-called rich men, hasn't it?
I believe that no one but God can make anyone
rich. Selfishness often runs counter to true self
interest ".

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth

WEALTH PRINCIPLE: Your income can grow only to the extent you do!
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: If you want to change the fruits, you will first have to change the roots. If you want to change the visible, you must first change the invisible.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: Money is a result, wealth is a result, health is a result, illness is a result, your weight is a result. We live in a world of cause and effect.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: Give me five minutes, and I can predict your financial future for the rest of your life.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: Thoughts lead to feelings. Feelings lead to actions. Actions lead to results.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: When the subconscious mind must choose between deeply rooted emotions and logic, emotions will almost always win.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: If your motivation for acquiring money or success comes from a non supportive root such as fear, anger, or the need to “prove” yourself, your money will never bring you happiness.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: The only way to permanently change the temperature in the room is to reset the thermostat. In the same way, the only way to change your level of financial success “permanently” is to reset your financial thermostat.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: Consciousness is observing your thoughts and actions so that you can live from true choice in the present moment rather than being run by programming from the past.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: You can choose to think in ways that will support you in your happiness and success instead of ways that don’t.
WEALTH PRINCIPLE: Money is extremely important in the areas in which it works, and extremely unimportant in the areas in which it doesn’t.

Six Reasons Why Some Rich People Go Broke
Why being rich doesn’t mean being financially intelligent
Ever hear someone say, “Once I have a lot of money, all my money problems will be over"?
People with this attitude don’t understand that having more money doesn’t solve your money problems. It just brings new problems. That is why you’ll often see athletes who come from a poor background have money problems even though they make millions of dollars a year. It’s also why many lottery winners go broke. They don’t know what to do with the money once they have it.
The following are six reasons why rich people still go broke:
1. People who grow up without money have no idea how to handle it
Too much money is often as big a problem as not enough money. If a person is not trained to handle large sums of money or does not have a proper financial educationor advisors, they will either stash the money away in the bank or just lose it. As my rich dad said, “Money does not make you rich. Financial education does.”
2. When people come into money, the emotional euphoria is like a drug that boosts your spirits
Rich dad said, “When the ‘money high’ hits, people feel more intelligent, when in fact they are becoming more stupid. They think they own the world and immediately go out and start spending money like King Tut with tombs of gold.”
As the old adage goes, “Money burns holes in pockets”…and in fortunes.
3. The hardest thing for many people is to say no to people they love when they ask to borrow money
I have seen many families and friendships break up when one person suddenly becomes rich. As rich dad said, “A very important skill in becoming rich is to develop the ability to say no to yourself and to the people you love.” The people who become rich and start buying big homes and boats are not able to say no to themselves let alone to their loved ones. They end up further in debt, just because they suddenly have a lot of money.
4. The person with money suddenly becomes an “investor,” but without financial education and experience
When people have money, they automatically think they are financially savvy, even if they never had money before and just got lucky. When you get rich, you suddenly have people banging down your door to get you involved in their “sure-fire” investments. But just because you qualify for big investments doesn’t mean you know anything about investing. A lot of financially-ignorant rich people lose their shorts—and fortunes—to bad investments.

5. The fear of losing increases
Many times a person with a poor person’s outlook on money has lived a life being terrified of being poor. So when the sudden wealth hits, the fear of being poor does not diminish. In fact, it increases. As my friend who is a psychologist says, “You get your fear.” If you act as if you’re always in danger of losing your money, chances are you will.
6. The person does not know the difference between good and bad expenses
Rich dad said, “The main reason I create assets is that I can increase my good expenses; the average person has mainly bad expenses.” This difference in good expenses and bad expenses was one of rich dad’s most important reasons for creating assets. He did so because the assets he created could buy other assets. Most people spend their riches on liabilities—things that take money out of their pocket—but the wise rich person spends money on assets that produce the ability to buy other assets (and some fun things too).
If you want to grow rich and stay rich, the number one thing you need is financial intelligence. That is your most important asset. Invest in that and everything else will fall into place.
The Mindset of a Successful Woman
1. See a world of abundance
There are two types of people in the world, those who see abundance and those who see scarcity. The reality is that the world is one of abundance, and once you see that, the way you approach life radically changes. Rather than compete with others and operate out of fear, you learn to work together and succeed together. You understand that if you don't achieve a goal this time around, there's plenty of opportunity down the line. Once you open your mind to the abundance of wealth all around you, you can harness it to achieve your dreams.
2. Use fear to your advantage
A friend of Robert's and mine says that fear is the indicator that there is usually something great on the other side. He has vowed to always "walk into the fear." One quote he shares is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: "He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life." When you are afraid to do something great, like start a business or invest in a new asset, use that fear to help propel you forward, not turn you away. Go under it, over it, around it, through it - but don't hang around in it.
3. Listen to your inner Yoda
There's a great scene from Star Wars where Yoda tells Luke, "There is no try. There is only do." One of the things that holds women back the most is the words "try" and "can't." You can, and you will. Don't use language that has defeat already built in. Instead, consider how you can do it and then either choose to do it, or not to do it.
4. Take responsibility
The worst thing you can do is blame others for your mistakes. Doing that keeps us in a holding pattern, unable to grow because we're so busy trying to stop everybody from holding us back. Really, we're the only ones holding us back. When you fail, own it. When you succeed, own that too. Learn what you can and move on. It's the only way forward.
5. Be generous
There's a tendency for women to be competitive with each other. Shocker, right? You're probably successful because others have invested in you. There is no woman who is an island unto herself (to modify the old adage). Someone probably invested in you, generously too. Do the same with others who can benefit from your knowledge. And maybe you'll even learn something along the way.
6. Always be learning
Nothing stops success like a closed mind. The world changes so rapidly that if you don't keep learning, you'll soon be left behind. Look for lessons wherever you can find them. Read continually. Do and learn. An open mind is an open door to success.
